Effect of Freeze–Thaw Cycles on the Performance of Concrete Containing Water-Cooled and Air-Cooled Slag

An experimental study on the resistance of concrete containing air-cooled slag (AS) and water-cooled (WS) against freeze–thaw cycles was conducted. For comparison, durability ASTM Type I ordinary Portland cement (OPC) exposed to same environment examined. To evaluate environment, an experiment conducted according C 666 procedure A. Furthermore, relative dynamic modulus elasticity, surface electrical resistivity, compressive strength specimens were measured after exposing them for a predetermined period, results compared with those OPC concrete. The relationship between freeze thaw resistances air-void system (spacing factor specific area) identified. microstructure observed using scanning electron microscopy identify interfacial transition zone, cracks, micropores. Experimental showed that blended WS AS significantly higher than in which 10% replaced by exhibited similar as 40% only WS. Therefore, it is expected based appropriate mix proportion design will exhibit excellent regions experiencing freezing temperatures.
